Nikki came to us wanting a downstairs WC under the stairs but was unsure as to what could be done with such a small space….
The truth was, not much unless we could utilise the space in the outside coal store (behind the left-hand wall above)
That came with a few implications though:
- The gas meter would need to be relocated into a meter box elsewhere, and a few gas pipes would need to be re-routed.
- The electric meter would also need to be relocated into an external meter box.
- The fusebox would need relocating.
- The floor level in the coal store differed to the floor level inside the house so this would need remedying.
- The old coal store door would need blocking up.
Luckily, UK Bathroom Guru have the experience, knowledge and team to deal with all of these.
So using our proprietary project planning system (below) we came up with a fully costed, fixed price proposal and set about delivering a brand-new downstairs WC for our customer…
Opening up the space and building a level floor in the old coalstore
Using the area at the foot of the stairs for storage and to house the relocated fuse box.
(We often relocate house alarms in this space too and/or hide the WC waste pipe to negate the need for boxing in inside the WC)
Relocating the gas & electrical meters into new meter boxes in conjunction with the utility companies.
Blocking up the old coal store door internally with blockwork…
And externally (a mix of stone block & render in this instance)

The finished area blends in seamlessly
The block paved drive needed reinstating once all groundworks were done by the utility companies.
Boarding & plastering the new WC once 1st fix plumbing & electrics are complete.
Half tiling the room with small metro tiles:
The final floor is installed, everything is decorated and final plumbing, electrical & joinery work is done.
Traditional suite items & tiles complement the house.
PS Corner basins work well with these types of jobs as they allow passage past them to the WC
And basins that are wall hung with an exposed trap only (no cabinet below them – as here) work well because the users’ knees can swing underneath them whilst sat on the loo (if space is tight.)
